2005 dodge dakota review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, bigger, with the only optional v8 in the class. introductionthe all-new 2005 dodge dakota represents yet another bold move into the truck market for dodge. With sales of basic small trucks in steady decline, dodge has redesigned the dakota as a much larger, much edgier and more macho midsize pickup. The dakota is now the largest and by far the most powerful pickup in the segment.  dakota competes against ford ranger, chevrolet colorado, gmc canyon, toyota tacoma, and nissan frontier. As with full-size pickups, competition for compact or mid-size trucks is hot. Though the ranger is dated, canyon, colorado, tacoma, and frontier are totally new pickups for either 2004 or 2005. Dakota's biggest advantage, other than its larger size, is the availability v8 engines, not one, but two of them. Its towing capacity has been expanded to 7,150 pounds, by far the most in the class.  built on a new frame, the new dakota is substantially longer than the previous model with styling that complements the recently redesigned durango suv and ram pickup. Getting in is easy and the redesigned interior is comfortable and convenient with controls that are easy to reach and operate.  underway, the dakota is smooth and quiet. The optional 4. 7-liter v8 burbles subtly in the background when cruising, but really scoots when the throttle is mashed. Yet its fuel economy is rated within 1 mpg of the standard v6's. The steering is light for easy maneuverability in crowded parking lots. Standard-cab pickups have faded in popularity as families are increasingly using pickups for recreation and as a transportation alternative to a car. So dodge doesn't even offer a regular cab dakota.  either body style and all three trim levels come standard with a 3. 7-liter v6. A 4. 7-liter magnum v8 engine 785) is available on all models. A high-output version of the 4. 7-liter v8 is available for the slt and laramie trim levels. Both bodies are built on the same wheelbase. Club cabs now feature small doors to access the rear compartment, which the old model did not have.  club cab and quad cab are available in st, slt, or lariat trim levels. The st trim level comes standard with 16-inch wheels. Slt adds 16-inch aluminum wheels, fog lamps, tilt steering, dual rear seats, and power windows, locks and mirrors. In addition, the mopar aftermarket parts side of chrysler will have dozens of appearance, performance and entertainment options that can be installed at the dealership before or after delivery. The dakota retains the look of the dodge ram and durango, though it looks crisper and the grille is laid back, not vertical. All models come with front and rear tow hooks and tie-downs in the bed.  new to the dakota is an enhanced accident response system or ears, which automatically turns on interior lights and unlocks doors in the event of an air bag deployment, so that medical or response personnel can help faster and easier. interiorjust about everything on the inside of the dakota is new. There are new black-on-white gauges with chrome rings, with the central speedometer about twice as large as the other two gauges. The angular center stack houses the sound system, climate controls and vents. The rear seats are deliberately stepped up on their bases so that rear-seat occupants can see out more easily, and they are split into 40/20/40 folding sections with two rear cupholders.  the driver's seat, the only one we occupied for any length of time, looked good and felt good with its upper and lower support wings and good padding where it counts. Interior room, even for a tall, gangly driver like me, was excellent. It's the best in the class with this new cab size. A center console and lots of cubbyholes provide space to stash stuff.  new interior features for the 2005 dakota include standard head restraints and shoulder belts for all seat positions, taller head restraints, optional sirius satellite radio, and an optional hands-free communications system that uses bluetooth technology to make a compatible cellphone work as part of the truck. driving impressionthe test truck, which was configured for five with front bucket seats, was surprisingly quiet, smooth and civil in its behavior, more like a car than a truck inside. The glass is 20 percent thicker, mufflers are larger, and there's more sound insulation throughout the body and firewall than before. It drives bigger than it looks, with a hefty, ram-like way about it, a nicely muscular street swagger.  the 4. 7-liter magnum v8 engine costs a little extra, but for us it was worth every penny, because fuel mileage barely takes a hit (epa-estimated city/highway 15/19 for the v6, 14/19 for the v8). The 3. 7-liter magnum v6 is rated 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. The 4. 7-liter v8 generates 230 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. At highway speeds it settled down into a nice background burble in overdrive fifth gear. Its strong torque means plenty of low-down grunt for pulling payloads of up to 1,800 pounds or towing up to 7,150 pounds.  the transmission has perfectly spaced ratios for trucking, and worked without complaint, roughness or harshness, even in high-rpm full-throttle upshifts. With only two occupants and no load, it really scoots from the stoplight despite the nearly 4800 pound weight of the quad cab 4x4. The chunky steering wheel feels great in the hands. The truck tracks extremely well, responds quickly to inputs, and stays hunkered down during mountain road playtime. Its 265/70r16 bfgoodrich wrangler tires were both grippy in corners and very quiet at highway speeds, adding a measure of plushness to the ride quality that we really appreciated. And the dakota start. Bucket Seats✔ Power Windows✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Cruise Control✔ Leather Seats✔ Chrome Wheels✔ Bluetooth✔ Aluminum Wheels

The SXT is essentially a value-priced version of the top ES model that includes a high-output engine, chrome wheels, and a spoiler. Equipped with single overhead camshafts and a multi-plenum intake manifold, the 3.5-liter engine produces 234 horsepower in the ES, but 244 horsepower in the SXT, thanks mostly to electronic control of the trick manifold.  In addition to its more powerful engine, the ES upgrades

2008 dodge caliber review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New srt4 model joins lineup. introductionthe dodge caliber was launched as a 2007 model. For 2008, the high-performance dodge caliber srt4 joins the lineup.  the dodge caliber is classed as a compact car, though it's larger than the neon it replaced. A five-passenger, five-door, the caliber isn't easily categorized, combining elements from hatchback, wagon and minivan designs. Though very popular in europe, hatchbacks, especially five-door hatchbacks, have not caught on in american garages. The five-door hatch is a practical design, but most americans prefer the styling of a traditional sedan with a separate trunk. Maybe that's changing, however. All-wheel drive makes the caliber a capable winter vehicle.  relatively affordable, caliber starts below $14,000 retail, and fuel economy is respectable, achieving 24/29 city/highway miles per gallon in its most frugal form, according to epa estimates.  at the other end of the scale, the new srt4 version has a turbocharged engine generating 285 horsepower. With a starting price of $22,435, it is a performance bargain.  the mid-level caliber sxt model with the 2. 0-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission is among the more enjoyable of the standard models, but the caliber is no sports car. For driving excitement, the srt4 is the choice.  the front seats are comfortable, with lots of head room, and there's a large amount of cargo space here. Packaging is functional, with folding rear seats that have an optional reclining adjustment and an optional fold-flat front passenger seat to make room for a ladder or more likely, a surfboard. A 148-horsepower 1. 8-liter is standard in se and sxt, a 158-hp 2. 0-liter is optional for sxt, a 172-hp 2. 4-liter is standard in r/t, and the srt4 has a 285-hp turbocharged 2. 4-liter. The 1. 8 is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, while the 2. 0 comes with a continuously variable automatic transmission (cvt). The 2. 4 is available with the five-speed manual in the front-drive r/t and the cvt in the all-wheel drive r/t. The srt4 comes only with a six-speed manual.  the se 13,925) comes standard with the 1. 8-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission. Air conditioning is not standard, nor are power windows. The se comes with manual roll-up windows and manual outside mirrors. Options for the se are as extensive as the standard equipment is basic. The power equipment group 595) includes power windows, outside mirrors and keyless remote central locking. The popular equipment group includes the power group, plus floor mats, a cargo area tonneau cover and cruise control. An uplevel stereo adds mp3 capability and six-disc cd changer. Sxt options include seat heaters for the cloth seats 250); sunroof 795); the driver convenience group 760) with dodge's uconnect hands-free cell phone link, homelink universal garage door opener, auto-dimming rearview mirror, vehicle information center and a tire pressure monitor; the popular equipment group 200) with fog lights, body side molding, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with redundant audio controls; a navigation system with six-disc cd changer 1395); and the premium sound group 495) boston acoustics sound system with nine speakers, including two articulating liftgate speakers called musicgate power. The available sport appearance group 365) has a body-color grille, color-keyed instrument panel and shifter bezel, fog lamps, sirius satellite radio, leather-wrapped steering wheel with redundant audio controls, and cloth bucket seats with contrasting inserts. When ordered with the 2. 0-liter engine, it also has dodge's autostick manual shiftgate with six preset gear ratios for the cvt automatic. A trailer tow group 130) adds an engine oil cooler and a wiring harness.  the r/t 18,395) comes standard with the 2. 4-liter engine, the manual transmission and, new for '08, front-wheel drive. Massive headlights are notched into the leading corners of the front fenders. A pouting lower lip-like bumper separates the grille and headlights from a slimmer, lower air intake and (uplevel) fog lamps.  the side view shows strongly blistered fenders front and rear beneath a wedge-shaped beltline. The lower portions of the doors wear longitudinal moldings, again, body color or chrome highlighted, that look like a bi-level rocker panel but aren't, but that nevertheless minimize the caliber's height. Full-round door handles, either chrome-trimmed or body color, bridge scooped-out grip spaces.  the roofline arcs cleanly from its junction with the hood just aft of the front wheel wells over the side door windows to pinch off at the tail end of the rear quarter glass. Topping this arc but stopping at the top of the backlight (rear windscreen) is an unbroken, thick strip of black molding the caliber's designers say is supposed to work with the arc and the truncated back end to impart a coupe look. We're not sure why that was important or that it necessarily succeeds, but it does buff up the caliber's side aspect.  the back end pulls from the magnum, too, with a steeply raked backlight beneath a roof-mounted spoiler and above a mostly upright lower liftgate, employing a hatchback style arguing against any comparisons with a traditional station wagon. A relatively short rear overhang and oversize taillight housings add credence to the argument.  the srt4 can be distinguished by several exterior features aimed at both form and function. The ride height is lowered 28 mm in front and 22 mm in the rear. The front end features a functional hood scoop, dual hood vents, a unique front fascia with brake cooling ducts next to the fog lights, and a lower air dam. For 2008, the srt4 is available in only brilliant black, sunburst orange, bright silver and inferno red. interiorstep inside the caliber and the dodge legacy is loud and clear. Gauges are large, round and gleefully legible with black markings on white backgrounds. In the srt4, the central gauge is the tachometer instead of the speedometer, a change dodge says it made because the srt4 is a driver's car. To the left of the steering wheel in the srt4 is a turbo boost gauge; this area serves as a small cubby in other models.  the srt4 also has a reconfigurable display with what dodge calls performance pages. This feature can provide readouts of lateral and longitudinal g forces, 1/8- and 1/4-mile time and speed, 0-60 mph time, and braking distance. All of these controls are easy to reach, but the materials are cheaply rendered and lacking in qual.

2007 dodge caliber review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new compact boasts innovative design and features. introductiondodge has introduced a remarkable replacement for the neon. There's also a choice of front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, the latter making the caliber a capable winter vehicle. The caliber is relatively affordable. Its starting price is below last year's neon, and fuel economy is respectable, achieving 28/32 city/highway miles per gallon in its most frugal form, according to federal government estimates. At the other end of the scale, an srt4 version is expected in spring 2007 with a turbocharged engine generating 300 horsepower.  the front seats are comfortable, with lots of headroom, and there's a large amount of cargo space here. Packaging is functional, with folding rear seats that have an optional reclining adjustment and an optional fold-flat front passenger seat to make room for a ladder or more likely, a surfboard. A couple of innovative options, especially for a car in this price class, are an air conditioned compartment in the glove box to chill water bottles or sodas and a swing-down stereo speaker panel attached to the liftgate that converts the back end to a sound stage for beach parties or tailgating.  the caliber is no sports car, but we most enjoyed the mid-level sxt model with the 2. 0-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission.  dodge is gambling a huge chunk of change on the hope new car shoppers looking for value and function can be persuaded hatchbacks are acceptable again, that five-door, small wagons have a place in american garages. The first two are available with a five-speed manual or an automatic continuously variable transmission.  the se 13,425) comes with the 1. 8-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission. The 2. 0-liter engine is optional 100), and both engines are available with the cvt automatic 1000). Air conditioning is not standard, nor are power windows. The se comes with manual roll-up windows and manual outside mirrors.  options for the se are as extensive as the standard equipment is basic. The power equipment group 545) includes power windows, outside mirrors and keyless remote central locking. There are two uplevel stereos, one adding cassette and mp3 capability and six-disc cd changer 420), the other just mp3 and the six-disc changer 320). Two other audio options are available, sirius satellite radio 195), including a pre-paid, one-year subscription, and a speaker package called musicgate power 435) comprising a boston acoustics sound system with nine speakers. A trailer tow group 130) adds an engine oil cooler and a wiring harness.  the sxt 15,425) also comes standard with the 1. 8-liter engine and five-speed manual, with the 2. 0-liter engine and cvt optional, but the list of standard features expands dramatically. Seat heaters can be ordered for the cloth seats 250). Cruise control is available 250), as is a sunroof 750), and uconnect, a bluetooth, hands-free cell phone capability 275). A driver convenience group 400) adds a compass, an ambient temperature gauge, homelink, auto-dimming inside mirror and a tire pressure monitoring system. A security group 275) includes the cargo area cover, an alarm and an air filtration system. A sport package 645) includes fog lamps, 17-inch aluminum wheels and a sport appearance interior group with contrasting inserts on the cloth seats and color-keyed instrument bezels and gear indicator for the automatic transmission. Aluminum wheels are available 400). Audio options and other items listed above are also available.  the r/t 19,425) comes standard with the 2. 4-liter engine, the cvt, and all-wheel drive. Standard features include the sxt features, the sport appearance interior group, cruise control, leather-clad steering wheel with audio controls, cargo cover, a sport suspension with performance steering and p215/55r18 all-season performance tires on aluminum wheels. Full-round door handles, either chrome-trimmed or body color, bridge scooped-out grip spaces.  the roofline arcs cleanly from its junction with the hood just aft of the front wheel well over the side door windows to pinch off at the tail end of the rear quarter glass. A relatively short rear overhang and oversize taillight housings add credence to the argument. interiorstep inside the caliber and the dodge legacy is loud and clear. Gauges are large, round and gleefully legible. The center stack presents the stereo face and climate control panel in stark relief with functional knobs, buttons and switches and trimmed in matte metallic plastic or not-very-convincing wood grain.  the shift lever extends from the base of the stack; the notched gate on the cvt makes ratio selections intuitive, the manual gearbox less so, but not bad for a front-wheel-drive. The power point serves neither the cell phone holder nor a radar detector well; located at the extreme base of the center stack, it leaves cords either draped over the center console's cup holders or dangling down the dash between the instrument cluster and the center stack.  the mp3 player/cell phone holder flips up out of the front of the center console armrest and, while properly sized for an ipod or similarly shaped mp3 device, adapts best to candy bar-style cell phones. This eases climbing in and out.  the front seats are comfortable, but far from plush, with decently bolstered back cushions. Bottom cushions, or squabs in designer lingo, are more flat than sculpted and a bit short on thigh support. Front-seat headroom is impressive, topping the five-door mazda3 hatchback by almost two inches, the five-door ford focus zx5 hatchback by almost an inch. It falls short of the pontiac vibe and toyota matri.

2008 dodge charger review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A wide range of models is available, but all are comfortable cruisers, offering drivers a friendly haven from traffic and bumpy freeways.  the model line ranges from the sporty and entertaining 2. 7-liter charger se to the 425-hp srt8. Between them are 3. 5-liter v6 and 5. 7-liter v8 models. The charger has all the pavement-ripping, gut-thumping power of the old muscle cars, but it's packaged with modern creature comforts and tempered by handling competency. Put another way, it rides, turns and stops as well as it goes.  the charger is fun to drive and enjoyable for just cruising along. It's perfectly in its element when making time on a freeway. It is a big, heavy, full-size sedan measuring more than 16 feet in length and tipping the scales near two tons, but it's responsive and entertaining.  for 2008, the charger gets minor interior design changes and two new entertainment options. Newly available are sirius backseat tv for the rear entertainment system, and dodge's mygig, a 20 gigabyte hard drive that holds songs, pictures, and navigation system map information. The interior changes include a new instrument panel and center console, as well as upgraded soft-touch surfaces on the arm rests, center console and door trim. Sxt comes with a 250-hp 3. 5-liter v6 and a five-speed automatic transmission with dodge's autostick manual shift gate. R/t models have a 340-hp 5. 7-liter v8 and the five-speed autostick automatic. The r/t can be upgraded to 350 horsepower by ordering the road/track or daytona packages. Srt8 models have a 425-hp 6. 1-liter v8 and the autostick.  the se 21,675) comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, cruise control, tilt/telescope steering wheel, driver and passenger lumbar adjustment, remote keyless entry, and am/fm/cd stereo with auxiliary input jack. Available options include an engine block heater 40), a smoker's group 30) that adds a lighter and ashtray, and the se convenience group 1 that adds an eight-way power driver's seat and adjustable pedals 505).  the sxt 25,685) upgrades with an eight-way adjustable power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, 60/40 split folding rear seat with fold-down center armrest, boston acoustics stereo with six speakers and 276-watt amplifier, interior air filter, power-adjustable pedals, sirius satellite radio with one year subscription, fog lamps and cast aluminum wheels. The sxt is available with all-wheel drive 28,035). Options include leather-trimmed seats 640), sunroof 950), and dodge's uconnect hands-free cell phone link now with ipod interface. The mygig entertainment system has 6. 5-inch touchscreen and a 20-gigabyte hard drive to hold music and pictures. The mygig multimedia infotainment system adds a navigation system. walkaroundthe charger recalls the 1966 dodge coronet. Despite its fastback, two-door hardtop styling, the old charger was somewhat blocky, with a squared-off front end, superficially sculpted slab sides and an equally vertical backside. There was the barest hint of a so-called coke bottle look, with the body sides slightly pinched in about where there would have been a b-pillar. Not until the 1968 model year was any attention paid to moving the car rapidly through the air with minimal disturbance. The 2008 charger starts at much the same place on the automotive styling evolutionary curve.  the same design team that parented the chrysler 300 and dodge magnum birthed the charger. The charger is built on the same platform as those two, but is three inches longer overall.  with this legacy, the upright silhouette comes as no surprise. The front end tilts forward as if it's leaning into the wind, specifically to recall the brutish, pre-aero-age styling of its muscle car era namesake.  dominating the front of the car are the trademark dodge crosshairs, chromed on the sxt and r/t, body-color in the se and srt8, and flat black on the daytona. Compound halogen headlights peer out under hooded, almost scowling brows. A thin, trifurcated air intake slices across the lower portion of the front bumper. The daytona and srt8 wear a flat-black chin spoiler. Fog lamps on the sxt and higher models fill small, sculpted insets at the lower corners.  from the side, the demi-fastback roofline and glasshouse look more grafted onto the somewhat fulsome body than a natural extension of the overall styling theme, as if the designer were trying to make a sedan look like a coupe. The beltline arcs softly back from the headlights, where it droops slightly, to about the midpoint of the rear side window, then kicks up over the rear quarter panel, visually bulking up the car's already hefty haunches.  the rear perspective shows a tall, almost vertical backside, with large taillights draped over the upper corners. A modest, kamm-like lip stretches across the trailing edge of an expansive trunk lid, atop which sits a lift-suppressing spoiler on the daytona and srt8. A recess in the bumper holds the license plate. On the se and sxt a single exhaust tip exits beneath the right-hand side, while the v8-powered models sport chrome-tipped, muscle car-idiom, dual exhausts. interiorinside, the dodge charger has much in common with the magnum, which is essentially the wagon version of this car.  the instrument cluster arrangement, which is slightly redesigned for 2008, is pleasantly informative. The big round speedometer and tachometer share the top half of the steering wheel opening, with fuel and coolant temperature gauges down in the left and right corners. The climate controls are conveniently positioned beneath the radio and are easy to operate.  the cruise control stalk has been moved from the 10 o'clock to the 4 o'clock position for 2008, making it more intuitive to use and eliminating the annoying tendency to hit the cruise stalk when signaling a turn.  the standard fabric-covered seats are comfortable, with adequate thigh support and side bolstering. Stepping up to the performance seats in the option packages gets more pronounced bolsters, which is good for those rare times when a twisty two-lane beckons, but not as good for climbing in and out of the car every day. Thanks to the sedan-spec wheelbase, there's plenty of rear seat room, too, even with the front seats at their rearmost positions. The thick front pillars are designed to meet roll-over standards, which makes checkin. 2003 dodge ram 2500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New hemi v8 brings more power. introductiondodge ram boasts high levels of refinement and comfort. Completely redesigned and re-engineered last year, this latest-generation ram has re-established dodge as a leading product among full-size pickups. But all this refinement doesn't mean the dodge ram has gone soft. The new-generation ram also delivers improved towing and hauling capability, plus more powerful and efficient engines.  for 2003, dodge has introduced a sophisticated new five-speed automatic transmission. A more capable off-road package has been added, along with a rugged work special. Also new for 2003 is a line of heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 models, not covered here.  in january 2003, the 5. 7-liter hemi v8 replaced the aging 5. 9-liter v8, increasing power by 100 horsepower and 40 pounds-feet of torque while improving fuel economy by 10 percent. lineupdodge ram is available with two cab configurations, regular cab and quad cab. Prices start at $18,525 for a 2wd regular cab short wheelbase. Quad cab models ride on a wheelbase that's 20 inches longer than comparable regular cab models.  two bed lengths are available, a 6-foot, 3-inch standard bed and an 8-foot long bed. Ordering the long bed adds $300-$350 to the price, and another 20 inches to the wheelbase. For maximum economy, two-wheel-drive rams can be ordered with a 3. 7-liter v6 that's similar in design to the 4. 7-liter v8. The most powerful engine in the line is the new 5. 7-liter hemi v8 with hemispherical combustion chambers for improved airflow and burn. The new hemi produces 345 horsepower and 375 foot-pounds of torque. When properly equipped, that increases the towing capacity to 9200 pounds and payload by an additional 500 pounds. The hemi adds about $800 to the price.  a five-speed manual transmission is standard with the 3. 7-liter v6 and 4. 7-liter v8. Optional is a new five-speed automatic 975) that includes an alternate second gear for hill-climbing and towing (so it's technically a six-speed). This new transmission is more responsive than the unit it replaces.  three trim levels are available, st, slt, and laramie.  st is the base level and comes standard with air conditioning, but is equipped with vinyl upholstery, wind-up windows, and manual door locks.  slt adds $1700-$3200, depending on cab style and driveline, and includes the 4. 7-liter v8, plus cloth upholstery, nicer interior trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a host of convenience items, and wider tires.  laramie is the luxury package, which costs in the neighborhood of $7800-$8900 and brings leather seating surfaces, dual-zone air conditioning, a premium stereo, 17-inch cast aluminum wheels, and a long, long list of luxury features.  sport body-color trim for grille and bumpers is available for $470 with any trim level; that price includes fog lights and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Also new this year is an off-road package 870-$1405) for 4wd models consisting of a 3. 92:1 limited-slip differential, heavy-duty engine cooling, lt275/70r17 all-terrain tires, skid plates, tow hooks, and fog lamps. walkaroundram's radical big-rig styling turned the pickup world upside down when it was introduced in 1994. It was a highly successful design, one that gave the dodge pickups a look of power and capability. The bold styling also helped boost sales exponentially. So dodge had no intention of turning away from the big horse-collar grille and freightliner fenders when it redesigned the ram. This latest dodge pickup maintains and even reinforces the look established nine years ago.  the sheet metal is indeed all new. Park a 2002-3 ram next to a 2001 or earlier ram and the differences are striking. The design has been extensively re-sculpted for reduced wind noise and better rainwater management. The new ram looks sleek and refined compared with the previous model. The old one looks mashed down compared with the new one.  few grilles are as instantly recognizable as the massive horse collar grille of the ram. Even more massive this year, the grille also provides trim-level identification: the outside rim is all chrome on the slt model, with a gray honeycomb center. Laramie features a body-color grille surround and chrome cross hairs. Sport trim includes a body-color surround and cross hairs with unique chrome billets in the center.  moving rearward, the new ram presents a more robust appearance than before. The broad, sloping hood has a pronounced crown that falls over the sides to the prominent front fenders. A faster, raked-back windshield improves aerodynamics and water management, and gives the new ram a more modern appearance. The leading edge of the front door overlaps the a-pillar, creating a smoother transition from the front of the cab to the side. Everything is smoother and more integrated. The big side mirrors, great for visibility, are now mounted on platforms to reduce wind noise, and a channel has been specially designed to keeps water off of the mirrors. An integrated air dam improves engine cooling and air conditioner performance.  standard bed length is 6 feet, 3 inches, but an 8-foot bed is now available for both cab styles. That's a bit much when trying to heave heavy gear aboard. interiorram interiors were completely redesigned last year.  the new interior is more comfortable than before. That comfort starts with roominess. To fit more space in the cab, dodge stole 3 inches out of the bed and added it to the cab's total length. Dodge claims its regular cab has the largest interior of any full-size standard-cab pickup.  the cloth 40/20/40 split bench front seat in the sport model is quite supportive, better than some of the seats we've seen recently in other brands. The optional leather seats are also comfortable and supportive during long drives. Three-point shoulder belts are used at all locations, including the rear center seat. Adjustable pedals are usually offered only with an automatic transmission, but for 2003 dodge has made them available on manual-shift pickups as well. We believe that's an industry first.  side-curtain airbags are a $390 option on regular cabs, $490 on quad cabs. A big fold-down center armrest/console comes with adjustable dividers and a power outlet. White-faced instruments with turquoise numbers look sporty and trendy, but don't offer the legibility of traditional white-on-black designs, particularly at dusk. At night, the instruments are nicely illuminated in green.  the design of the audio system could be improved for ease of use. Setting a button for a station, for example, requires pressing a separate 'set' button, rather than just holding the station button down. Sliding bass and treble controls are harder to adjust than knobs when bouncing around in a pickup truck. Optional steering wheel audio controls 75) solve this with brilliantly designed buttons behind the steering wheel that are easy to use. Likewise, cruise controls 390, including tilt steering) on the steering wheel are easy to operate.  otherwise, the center dash is a paradigm of convenience. Large heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (hvac) buttons can be operated while wearing gloves. A textured fabric is used for trim around the audio and hvac controls, somewhat similar to what's found in volkswagens, gives the center dash a nice look and feel. Just below the hvac controls is a slot lined with a rubber mat that's perfect for a wallet or other small items. A big panel below that folds down with adjustable cup holders.
